Historical Building Protection: fit, limits, and quote inputs

Use this page to decide whether the method fits observed property conditions and to prepare a comparable written scope. It is not a promise of provider availability, price, credentials, timing, or results.

Request a Provider Match

Send property details for review. A provider, response time, inspection, or quote is not guaranteed.

Property Type

Optional project evidence

These details improve provider matching and later quote comparison. Do not climb or disturb a nest to collect them.

By submitting this form, WD Pigeon Solutions may use your information to respond to your request and, where needed, share your details with a sister company or affiliated local provider to help with quotes, scheduling, or service. See our Privacy Policy.

Direct decision guide

Usually considered for

Complex or sensitive structures requiring a surface-by-surface access, attachment, appearance, and stakeholder plan.

Verify on the property

Ownership approvals, historic or engineering constraints, wind and weather exposure, rope or lift access, public protection, substrate testing, drainage, and emergency egress.

Principal limitation

A standard detail can damage sensitive materials or fail when height, movement, public access, or untreated adjacent geometry is ignored.

Alternative to compare

Compare reversible attachment, netting, point deterrents, sealing, operational controls, and monitoring with the responsible design or facilities authority.

Build a quote that can be compared

Send safe wide and close photographs and document the following inputs. Do not climb or disturb active nests or large dropping accumulations to collect evidence.

  • drawings and affected elevations
  • access and public protection
  • substrate and attachment testing
  • stakeholder approvals
  • inspection and maintenance plan
  • active nests, species, and wildlife requirements
  • occupied areas, access, safety, cleanup, and disposal

Require in writing

Treated surfaces and dimensions, materials and attachment, exclusions, access assumptions, cleanup, permits or credentials claimed, price and payment, change orders, completion evidence, maintenance, and any warranty.

What a responsible historical building protection decision requires

Sources reviewed 2026-08-01. Recheck source instructions and applicable requirements before work.

Historic-building bird control should begin with significance, condition, bird-use, and access mapping. Prefer the least damaging, visually reviewed, maintainable, and reversible option that protects character-defining materials; preserve drainage and inspection; and obtain the responsible authority's approval before exterior change.

Decision and quote checks

  1. 1.Identify designation, district, controlled features, owner covenants, prior treatments, material condition, and approval contacts.
  2. 2.Map species, nests, roosts, openings, contamination, water paths, public exposure, and character-defining elements.
  3. 3.Compare nonattachment, reversible, concealed, and minimally attached options through drawings and a documented mock-up.
  4. 4.Record approved materials, exact locations, attachment tests, access plan, completion views, removal method, and maintenance.

NPS — Preservation Brief 1: Cleaning and Water-Repellent Treatments for Historic Masonry Buildings

Publisher: National Park Service

What it says
NPS explains that masonry composition, condition, soiling, testing, gentlest-effective methods, and possible damage must be evaluated before cleaning or treatment.
How to use it
Test the gentlest cleaning and attachment assumptions on representative historic material before broad work.
What it does not prove
This preservation guidance does not inspect the property, specify a bird-control product, approve an attachment, or replace the responsible preservation professional and authority.
NPS — Preservation Brief 14: New Exterior Additions to Historic Buildings

Publisher: National Park Service

What it says
NPS emphasizes protecting significant historic materials and character, minimizing loss, and making exterior additions compatible and differentiated.
How to use it
Use compatibility, differentiation, minimum loss, and reversibility when reviewing exterior bird-control additions.
What it does not prove
The brief is not project approval, an engineered attachment design, a product endorsement, or a substitute for local historic review and property-specific documentation.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service — Bird Nests

Publisher: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

What it says
FWS explains that legal protections can apply to nests with eggs, chicks, or dependent young and that species and nest status matter before disturbance.
How to use it
Resolve species and active-nest status independently from preservation approval before disturbing occupied fabric.
What it does not prove
The page is general federal guidance, not species identification, a permit, authorization to handle wildlife, or a complete federal, state, tribal, and local legal determination.
