Does homeowners insurance cover pigeon damage?

Do not assume it does. Coverage depends on the exact policy, cause and timing of loss, exclusions, maintenance history, resulting damage, deductible, endorsements, notice, and insurer investigation. Some policy forms permit exclusions for damage caused by birds or for deterioration, while a separately covered resulting loss may be treated differently. Ask the insurer in writing before authorizing repairs.

Build a claim file before repairs

Preserve evidence without delaying emergency steps needed to prevent additional damage. Keep the policy, declarations, endorsements, photographs, dates, prior maintenance, inspection findings, estimates, invoices, and communications.

  • observed damage and discovery date
  • suspected cause separated from confirmed professional findings
  • temporary mitigation and why it was necessary
  • bird exclusion, cleanup, roof, electrical, insulation, and finish repairs as separate scopes
  • deductible, exclusions, limits, proof-of-loss, and notice deadlines

Questions for the insurer

Ask which policy language applies, whether an inspection is required before work, what emergency mitigation is expected, whether resulting damage is analyzed separately, and what documentation is needed. A contractor should not promise coverage or interpret the policy for the insurer.

Next step

Notify the insurer or licensed agent promptly, request the relevant policy provisions in writing, and obtain property-specific estimates that separate cause investigation, mitigation, cleanup, repair, and future exclusion.
